TEKNIKER (TEK), a non-profit R&D Centre in Spain’s Basque Country, enhances societal well-being and industrial competitiveness through research and innovation. It specializes in multiple sectors including manufacturing and energy, promoting sustainable technological advancements.

Role in InterPED

In the InterPED project, TEKNIKER optimizes thermal energy management at pilot sites, leading efforts to improve operational efficiencies. They design predictive systems for energy assets management, integrating advanced forecasting of weather and demand. TEKNIKER also contributes across work packages, focusing on the development and deployment of innovative energy solutions.

Giroa Veolia

As a leader in optimized resource management, Giroa Veolia (VEO) designs essential solutions in water, waste, and energy management that contribute to the sustainable development of communities and industries. With a workforce of approximately 220,000 globally, Veolia supplied essential utilities to millions, generated substantial energy, and managed vast amounts of waste in 2021, earning a consolidated revenue of €28.508 billion.

Role in InterPED

In the InterPED project, VEO operates as a key service provider for the Lugaritz-Matía Community in Spain, one of the project’s four primary pilot sites chosen for their diverse environmental and socioeconomic conditions. Veolia’s role is crucial in managing and optimizing the thermal energy systems at this pilot, ensuring efficient energy use and integration that aligns with the broader goals of ecological transformation and sustainable urban development.

Grid Singularity

Grid Singularity (GSY) is an innovative startup creating open-source technologies for energy markets. Their flagship product, the Grid Singularity Exchange, equips energy communities and prosumers with tools for simulating and executing decentralized, grid-aware energy trading. GSY’s mission is to foster a sustainable, equitable, and democratic energy market, empowering individuals and communities to choose how they consume, trade, or share energy.

Role in InterPED

In the InterPED project, Grid Singularity is pivotal in developing local energy marketplaces, integrating AI and machine learning services to enhance the efficiency and capabilities of energy trading platforms. The Institute Mihailo Pupin (IMP) is a premier Serbian R&D institution in the fields of information and communication technologies. With over 40 years of experience, IMP exemplifies the successful integration of academic research with industrial application, specializing in automated control systems and energy management.

Within the InterPED project, IMP plays a crucial role in enhancing and integrating platform services. The Catholic University of Louvain

UCLouvain plays a crucial role in InterPED through its Institute of Mechanics, Materials, and Civil Engineering (iMMC), focusing on energy system optimization for various scales. Leading the planning for energy communities, UCLouvain utilizes the Renewable Energy Hub Optimizer (REHO) to integrate local renewable energy sources effectively.

Level9 (Lvl9), strategically headquartered in Brussels, Belgium, unites industry and academic experts from across Europe. Committed to empowering organizations, Level9 focuses on user experience, offering services ranging from UX-first design to real-time analytics and advanced AI solutions. Their diverse offerings also cover blockchain solutions, smart contracts, and robust data management strategies, ensuring cutting-edge, comprehensive tech solutions.

Role in InterPED

In the InterPED project, Level 9 leads the Dissemination and Communication Strategy, responsible for enhancing project visibility and stakeholder engagement. They orchestrate the development of dissemination materials, manage digital platforms, and lead the standardization and policy advocacy efforts under Work Package 9. Level 9 also guides the replication strategies, facilitating the expansion and application of InterPED methodologies beyond the project scope.

SOFTWARE IMAGINATION & VISION (SIMAVI), established in 2019 from the division of SIVECO Romania SA, leverages extensive experience in software development across various sectors including education, health, customs, and more. Built on a European model, SIMAVI stands out with its unique competence centers and internationally competitive specialists. As a provider of IT services to European Commission organizations, SIMAVI exemplifies a commitment to technological excellence and innovation.

Role in InterPED

In the InterPED project, SIMAVI plays a crucial role in the Alba Iulia College District pilot. SIMAVI’s responsibilities include implementing robust data protection measures and developing a citizen-centric mobile app to enhance user interaction and engagement with the energy systems of the pilot, aligning with the project’s goals of advancing sustainable urban energy solutions.

Over the past 15 years, the municipality has successfully drawn in over €300 million in non-reimbursable funds to fuel development projects across diverse sectors, including mobility, energy, smart city infrastructure, and cultural heritage. Alba Iulia is actively involved in Work Packages 3 and 4 of the InterPED project, leading a pilot initiative to develop a Positive Energy District (PED) within the municipality. This role includes implementing advanced energy solutions that align with the city’s sustainability goals and leveraging its historical backdrop as a foundation for innovative urban energy practices.

Electricity Company of Massagno

Electricity Company of Massagno (AEM) is a leading Distribution System Operator (DSO) in Switzerland, renowned for its innovative approach to the electricity market. Integrating tradition with cutting-edge technology, AEM collaborates with universities and tech companies to pioneer digital solutions in energy management. Deeply rooted in its community, AEM values its strong connections with local users and institutions, ensuring that its advancements in energy are both revolutionary and community-focused.

Role in InterPED

In the InterPED project, AEM serves as the demo site leader for the Swiss pilot, managing the pilot site’s operations with a focus on data collection and system integration. Their key initiatives include recovering waste heat from biomass sources, optimizing the use of multiple energy vectors, and enhancing grid flexibility. The University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland

SUPSI spearheads the development of an electric vehicle (EV) charging orchestration tool and an energy management visualization tool within the InterPED project. They focus on crafting a data-driven algorithm that optimizes EV charging to maximize solar energy use and minimize peak demand. The visualization tool will enable communities to proactively understand and engage with demand response initiatives. SUPSI also plays a key role in implementing these technologies in the Swiss Arena Innovation Community pilot, ensuring practical application and integration.

Heriot-Watt’s research team is pioneering methods to engage communities in Positive Energy Districts, leveraging shared imaginaries, participatory design, and user story elicitation. They are also developing data-driven algorithms to forecast energy demand flexibility, directly informed by citizen engagement. This approach ensures that their contributions are deeply aligned with user needs and sustainability goals.

Findhorn Innovation Research & Education

Findhorn Innovation Research & Education, centered in Findhorn Ecovillage, aims to transform human settlements into fully sustainable communities. Their efforts span across various sustainability goals including social engagement, economic community development, and environmental sustainability. Key areas include energy conservation, renewable energy, nature-based wastewater treatment, organic food production, and electrification—all contributing towards achieving carbon neutrality by 2030.

Role in InterPED

In the InterPED project, FIRE serves as a critical case study site where researchers and community members converge to explore the potential of Positive Energy Districts (PEDs). Leveraging renewable energy sources (RES), storage solutions, and excess/waste heat (E/WH), FIRE is pivotal in enhancing grid robustness and consumer engagement through demand flexibility and active participation. Their goal is to boost local renewable energy consumption, increase community resilience, and foster collaboration among stakeholders.
