In July 2024, Bilbao hosted the second meeting of the year for the Industrial Decarbonisation Forum, organised by the industrial clusters and coordinated by SPRI. Held at the Euskalduna Palace, the forum brought together over 120 representatives from 72 Basque companies and entities, all focused on addressing the challenges and opportunities in electrifying industrial energy consumption.
The event began with discussions on the growing interest in industrial decarbonization and the importance of technological development in accelerating this process. Presentations highlighted the strategies and technologies enabling the electrification of industrial energy demands, as well as the necessary investments in the electricity grid to support increased consumption and facilitate decarbonization. These presentations showcased innovative solutions, such as high-temperature heat pumps and various decarbonization strategies, along with R&D projects aimed at improving industrial processes.
Among the standout contributions was Giroa Veolia’s presentation on the InterPED project. Gorka Naveran, Coordinator of the R&D Department at Giroa Veolia, showcased the project as an exemplary model for optimal energy management. The InterPED project demonstrated how the integration of various energy vectors can enhance energy efficiency in residential areas, particularly through district heating models. This presentation highlighted InterPED’s role in achieving a positive energy balance and underscored the project’s potential in advancing sustainable urban energy systems.
The day wrapped up with bilateral B2B meetings, providing attendees with opportunities to network, share insights, and explore potential collaborations. This interactive segment facilitated over 30 meetings, fostering connections and collaborations among participants.
As we move forward, the insights and connections forged at this forum will undoubtedly contribute to the ongoing efforts to create more sustainable and efficient industrial energy systems.
