Expanding InterPED’s Energy Literacy Experiment to Scottish Primary Schools

InterPED’s energy literacy experiment is set to reach a new and younger audience, thanks to a successful funding application by Tasniva Rahman Mumu from Heriot-Watt University. Tasniva has been awarded support from STEM Seedlings, a Scottish science outreach programme organised by the RSE Young Academy of Scotland. The initiative empowers Early Career Researchers (ECRs) to inspire young students, with a particular focus on increasing the visibility of female role models in STEM and delivering engaging science workshops in underprivileged Scottish primary schools.

The new project will build on InterPED’s existing energy literacy activities, previously tested with adults and older people in the Findhorn Ecovillage and the Alba Iulia community. Between September and December 2025, Tasniva will design and deliver a series of workshops for children aged 9–12 across Scottish schools. For primary school children, energy is already a part of daily life—from the lights they switch on and the cartoons they watch to the warmth of the sun in their playgrounds. These workshops will introduce energy and climate concepts through a hands-on activity: the Energy/Climate Explorers card game. Designed as an investigative game, it encourages children to explore how energy is used and how it can be saved, helping them understand their role in protecting the planet.

By adapting the experiment for younger audiences, InterPED aims to spark curiosity and awareness about sustainability from an early age, inspiring the next generation of energy-conscious citizens.
